Sitting in the great hall with a cup of tea in one hand and a piece of toast in the other, Severus looked immaculate and reserved as ever, with his scowl firmly in place and, without a doubt, a scathing remark ready for those foolish enough to approach him.
Yet, even though she couldn’t put a finger on it, Minerva sensed something different about him. Severus himself didn’t seem to notice her blatant staring, he, as always, was trying to enjoy his meagre breakfast in the noisy hall. Minerva bit back a chuckle as she remembered how Albus had kindly suggested, well, all but forced, Severus to attend all meals, so they could at least be sure that the boy ate something.
Boy. He was nearly fifty now, but, like Albus, she still saw him as a boy. After all, she could still see the bright eleven year old she had taught ...
That was it. His eyes.
She hadn’t seen that light in his eyes for far too long. Oh, it was barely noticeable, but she had known him long enough to notice even the smallest of changes in him.
Before she could mull over the reason though, Harry passed her chair and her attention was drawn away from Severus as she looked up to him to return his morning greetings.
He looked as if he just came from the quidditch pitch, red tinged cheeks from the fresh air, sparkling, bright eyes and windblown hair, though it scarcely looked any different from his normal hair style. He sat down in his seat next to Severus, greeting him with as much fervour as he had all of them.
Was she seeing things, or did Severus actually nod?
She shook her head. No, she must have imagined it. Severus barely ever acknowledged Harry, or anyone else in the hall for that matter.
No, Severus was clearly ignoring the now cheerfully chatting Harry, who was buttering a piece of toast.
Piece of toast? But, Harry never had toast for breakfast, did he?
Pancakes and bacon, yes, but never toast.
After a few minutes, Harry indeed reached for the pancakes, still chatting away, but the movement could not conceal its purpose, and Minerva’s eyes widened when she realised he put the buttered toast on Severus’ plate.
Now Harry had really done it.
No one had ever come away unscathed after imposing on Severus in such an intimate matter.
Even though she felt sorry for Harry, having that light back in Severus eyes was too dear to her to even think of interfering. So, she counted her blessings and waited for the proverbial dung bomb to drop.
But nothing could have been farther from the truth.
True, Severus scowled at Harry, but the scowl quickly morphed into a hint of a smile, his eyes lighting up once again.
Minerva was absolutely gobsmacked.
Severus had smiled ... at Harry.
A very slight, but nevertheless genuine smile.
And suddenly, Minerva wondered whether Harry had really been outside flying ...
