“Obsessions have power, Harry,” Severus had said once.

Now Harry finally understood. For some reason there were no pancakes this morning and he wondered if it was an omen. His eyes strayed to the pieces of toast waiting patiently for their owner, and he sighed. Another omen?

Was this how Severus had felt when he was the one missing meal after meal, because he couldn’t bear spending any time away from his new racing broom?

Although, Severus had seemed rather short and out of sorts then ... for Severus.

“Harry, are you alright?”

Harry turned to meet Neville’s concerned expression.

“Yes, I’m fine.”

The look on Neville’s face betrayed his disbelief, and the way he was acting Harry wouldn’t have believed himself either.

“Really, Neville. Everything is fine. I promise.”

“Well, if you’re sure, but ...”

“Yes, I know. If he hurts me, you’ll hex him.”

Neither could help but chuckle at this, it was a long running joke between the two of them. Although sometimes he wondered who exactly was afraid of who.

But Severus would never hurt him ... intentionally.

Harry finished his breakfast in silence, ignoring the questioning and sympathetic looks his colleagues were giving him. He stayed long after everyone else had left the Great Hall, unable to keep himself from glancing over to Severus’ plate, where the two lonely pieces of toast still lay untouched.

Severus had been awfully secretive the last six days. Never in bed before Harry was asleep, and never there when Harry woke up. He sighed.

Maybe Severus had finally had enough of him. Merlin knew they had their share of domestic fights. Maybe that last one had been the last straw for Severus.

He was about to get up, when he felt a presence next to him. Turning his head, his eyes widened, and he found himself gaping like a fish.

Kneeling on one knee before him, Severus looked incredibly solemn as he reached for his right hand and put something on his ring finger.

“Harry. Will you do me the honour of becoming my bonded, my mate, for as long as fate will have it?”

Shock somehow subdued him as he watched the golden snake circling his finger, its tiny tongue slithering in and out its mouth. He could sense the magic flowing through, it must have taken so much time to ...

Suddenly everything made sense. The missing meals, the dark circles under Severus’ eyes, his aggravation.

Harry beamed and without any hesitation he joined Severus on the floor.

“Yes, Severus. For as long as fate will have it will I be your bonded, your mate.”

Nothing else mattered, as Severus’ lips touched his, and Harry lost himself in the darkness of his eyes.

Who cared Severus had waited until the Great Hall was completely empty. Who cared why Severus had missed his meals. Who cared ...

Okay, so he did care about the stupid pancakes, but he could always ask Dobby to bring some down, with strawberries and cream, later ...

much later.
