It was their fifteenth anniversary today, although no one around them had even had a clue before their tenth. What had started as an agreement to work off mutual frustration had turned into the solid relationship neither of them had ever expected to find.
And now he, Severus Snape, was ready to take the next step.
He had spent hours of research on the correct spells, incantations and perfect shape for the bond ring, and it took at least double the time to make it. But it had been worth it. The ring in his pocket hummed with magic as he caressed it with his thumb.
He had planned it all very carefully. Today was going to be perfect.
Checking the tray dressed with pancakes, strawberries, cream, toast, pumpkin juice and tea, he nodded his appreciation to the house elf, who was staring at him with an idiotic grin on its face.
“Dobby is pleased professor Snape is making Harry Potter happy.”
Severus rewarded it with a glare that would send students running, but the elf just kept grinning. He should have known though, it had always doted on Harry after all. He threw in an extra glare for measure as he took the tray and made his way back to the dungeons.
But Harry wasn’t in the dungeons.
Thus, here he stood in the Great Hall, hidden from spying eyes, his chest aching at the forlorn look in Harry’s eyes, feeling a strong urge to hex himself.
Merlin! He was such a fool.
In all his fastidious planning and preparation, he had forgotten the most important aspect ... Harry. The past six days he had missed meal after meal acting secretive and cantankerous, and not once had he explained his absence to Harry.
There was no doubt in his mind that he was the reason the boy was looking so miserable now, though his loathing of public scenes prevented him from coming out of hiding and ending Harry’s misery.
Instead he waited, watching Harry ignoring their colleagues and throwing glances at the plate next to his, knowing it contained two pieces of buttered toast ... for him.
When the Great Hall had finally cleared out, he strode towards the teacher’s table, where Harry sat seemingly oblivious to the fact the hall was now empty. He sighed. This was definitely not how he had planned it, but he had to do it now, before he lost his nerve ... before he lost his Harry.
Taking the ring out of his pocket, he kneeled down next to Harry’s chair. When Harry’s face whipped around, he forced himself ignore the shocked expression and made sure to keep eye contact as he slid the ring on Harry’s finger and spoke the traditional words.
“Harry. Will you do me the honour of becoming my bonded, my mate, for as long as fate will have it?”
As Harry joined him on the floor, responding with the traditional answer, all he cared for was Harry’s smile.
It was perfect.
